I was teaching in Mile, I took a 4-hour bus to Jianshui to stay for 2 days.
Zhu Gardens is also a tourist attraction, but it is even more magical to stay in for the night. What a gorgeous place, and the rooms..well, take a look at the photos! It is considerably more expensive than other hotels in the area but still not overly expensive I suppose in comparison to Western hotels. Yunnan is generally very cheap - It was sometimes only about £4 for a 3-course meal!
Jianshui is become more of a Han Chinese tourist attraction, and unfortunately is becoming increasingly tacky, but at the moment it's still alright and preserved a lot of its culture and old buildings. Just don't go to the Zhu Gardens restaurant with the dancers..it's a rip off and not an authentic experience. There's a restaurant aimed at tourists with an English menu but serves really tasty local dishes just opposite the Gardens called Xianmanlou (or something like that). Otherwise it's really about trying the street food, and avoiding restaurants that look like they might give you poisoning!
The hotel do make an effort to accommodate Westerners for breakfast, but you can see they're not used to it! Yunnan's main crops are tobacco and rice, so they don't eat much bread (or wheat products basically) apart from this weird sweetened brioche stuff. They eat spicy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
The staff speak little English. The Western tourists there at the moment seem to all be French so maybe they know more French than English, je ne sais pas!
You are really staying in a museum.
The old house is beautifully restored and creates a truly unique experience. Each room looks different. Each courtyard has it's own style.
I should mention that the rooms are fairly simple (something else would not match with the overall experience) but functional.
Some travel guides mention a restaurant. We found a small bar (beer, coffee, soft drinks) but not a restaurant. This is not really an issue as the Zhu Family Garden is just in the center of (a part) of the old town. Nearby - less than one minute walk - are different good restaurants to eat.
The Zhu Family Garden hotel is a Qing dynasty mansion, one of the few that wasn't subdivided during the Cultural Revolution. There are 42 courtyards and many rooms, not to mention countless beautifully restored wood carvings. The room was decorated with traditional furniture including mosquito nets artfully draped over the beds (unfortunately necessary). An absolutely lovely place to spend a few nights.
impression de dormir dans un musée hors du temps et de l'ordinaire;
Les chambres sont belles, les peintures et les lanternes incroyables, et le service de grande qualité; Il y a même un calligraphe qui travaille à l'ancienne et réalise des merveilles.
l'hotel mérite même un détour tellement il est stupéfiant
